Seeing ice on your air conditioner in the middle of summer can seem strange, but it’s actually one of the more common cooling problems we diagnose. Restricted Airflow Is Often the Culprit
Your air conditioner depends on a constant flow of warm indoor air moving across the evaporator coil. As that air passes over the cold coil, heat is absorbed and the cooled air is distributed throughout your home.
If airflow becomes restricted, the coil can become too cold, causing moisture in the air to freeze instead of draining away. As more ice forms, airflow is reduced even further, creating a cycle that eventually prevents the system from cooling altogether.
One of the most common causes of airflow problems is a dirty air filter. Clogged filters reduce the amount of air reaching the evaporator coil, forcing the system to work harder while increasing the risk of freezing. Dirty blower components, blocked supply registers or closed return vents can create similar problems.
Low Refrigerant Can Also Cause Ice
Another common cause of a frozen air conditioner is low refrigerant.
Unlike fuel, refrigerant is not consumed during normal operation. If levels are low, there is usually a leak somewhere within the system. Reduced refrigerant pressure lowers the temperature of the evaporator coil, making it easier for condensation to freeze.
Low refrigerant often develops gradually. You may notice your home taking longer to cool, warmer air coming from the vents or the system running almost continuously before ice becomes visible.
